Learn how to apply Flys-Off fly repellent ointment to your horse, including preparation, application, and safety tips for effective fly control.
Quick Answer
To protect your horse from flies, apply Flys-Off fly repellent ointment directly to sensitive areas, avoiding eyes and mucous membranes, and reapply as needed, especially after sweating or bathing.
Why Choose an Ointment Over a Spray?
Ointments offer targeted application, which is ideal for sensitive areas like the face and ears where sprays can be difficult to use without getting into the horse's eyes. They also tend to stay in place longer than sprays, providing more sustained protection.
Know Your Horse's Sensitivity
Some horses are more sensitive to fly repellents than others. Always test a small area first and observe for any adverse reaction. If your horse has a known skin condition, consult your veterinarian before using any new product.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
- Prepare Your Horse: Groom your horse to remove dirt and debris from the coat. This helps the ointment contact the skin more effectively. Clean skin ensures better product adherence and efficacy.
- Apply to Sensitive Areas: Scoop a small amount of ointment with your fingers and apply it to areas where flies are most bothersome, such as around the eyes, ears, and muzzle. Avoid direct contact with the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Avoid mucous membranes to prevent irritation.
- Reapply as Needed: Reapply the ointment after heavy sweating, bathing, or if you notice flies returning. The frequency depends on fly pressure and weather conditions. Monitor fly activity and adjust reapplication accordingly.
